Raising funds for research into childrens' cancers
"Wardie's Way" Makes it's First Contribution
We are delighted to confirm that "Wardie's Way" has made it's first meaningful contribution!
From the money that has been raised to-date, just over €5.000 has been used to purchase a Dutch-language version of the international testing equipment needed by the team in the Paediatric Haematology-Oncology unit in the U.Z.Gent (Gent Hospital).
Pictured (right) with the new equipment are Dr Genevieve Laureys, who heads-up the team, and Geertrui Berghmans, one of the resident paediatric psychologists based in the hospital.
The equipment is used by the psychologists, such as Geertrui, to assess the impact of cancer treatment on children up to the age of eight by measuring their cognitive development. It is most commonly used on children with brain tumours, or those who have undergone a bone-marrow transplant. Previously the hospital only had equipment that was 10 years old and, consequently, out-of-date. As a result, their psychologists would have to spend some of their valuable time travelling to gain access to up-to-date equipment.
Now that they have their new equipment, they are able to spend their time working with the children that so sadly need their help. And this has been made possible by generous donations already made to "Wardie's Way".
